Leadership Practices Throughout my Shipboard Experience

It takes you nothing to be a normal man, but takes everything from you to be a gentle leader. 
it's easy to be a normal man in the society, institution, country and/or the world but to be an effective and a role model leader needs skills and practices, needs will and courage, long vision and sharp look. 
In November 2016, i was involved in practical training on-board my first Misc vessel as part of my future carrier training. 
As i joined my first ship as a junior cadet with zero experience on sea going vehicles. I was guided thoroughly about the do and don'ts. I was also warned of risks and dangers. I was very observant on superiors approach to different ranks among ship officers, crew and engineers. From the starting of my journey i was truly astonished of the balance that superiors practiced.
being a leader on-board a ship requires a person to consider many factors: 
  • Training of members on various aspects;
as a captain or a chief engineer on-board ship, junior officers, junior engineers and crew are expecting to learn from you. so, a scheduled training sessions should be made to enhance performance. 
As a leader, the master used to interact with all and listen attentively and take decisions wisely. Throughout days of training sessions, we used to clarify points of misunderstanding and point of doubt.
Not only Master or Chief engineer, but also chief mate and second engineer have to teach their juniors who will be their future right hand when he become as a master or chief engineer.
Giving chance for officers to give their point of views, to explain their understanding of concepts and sharing their believes is also important.
After juniors finish their presentations, senior officers have to give their feedback and correct their misconception.

Female engineer was encouraged by her chief engineer. she was the only female on-board. so chief  



  • Consider cultural and religious differences and celebrations;


  • Build teamwork and cooperation among members;

  • Improve trust and encourage people to work with no cheating;
