LEADERSHIP - DECISIVENESS
Decisiveness is the most important aspect when you are a leader. You have to always be confident when giving instructions and taking decisions. Below are the ways of being decisive
1. Decide to be decisive
2. Picture yourself as a decisive person
3. stop worrying about bad decisions
4. Be brave in the face of your mistakes
I sailed 383 days on two merchant LNG vessels. Throughout the long and lonely days, I realised that to be a good leader, you should always be decisive. I learned this from my captain who is always decisive in giving instructions and taking decisions. He is always bold when talking and gives straight forward solutions to any problem faced by the ship crew. He also thought me not to be panic in case of emergency and take appropriate and suitable decisions.
Once there was a quarrel between a able bodied seaman and third officer. The able bodied seaman was working with the third officer on bridge. The able bodied seaman was not doing his watchkeeping duty. The third officer advised the able bodied seaman but he ignored it. This caused a fight to occur between both of them. The news went to the captain. The able bodied seaman and third officer asked for forgiveness from the captain. The captain took a strong and firm decision to sign off both the personnel in the next port. This is when I learned that even though we should forgive people at certain times, important decisions like this should always be made to avoid further problems among the ship crew.
My captain was also decisive when he has the conn on the bridge. He was always bold when giving instructions to the helmsman in close quarter situations. He remains calm all the time and act fast when there is any emergency. I hope one day I can end up like him.
