Leading and being lead are totally two different things. What does it really take to be good leader and a follower. For example, lets say you are the manager of a business firm, what does it really take for you to become a successful manager?Your success as a manager will depend on your skills, ability, and knowledge in planning. If you are in senior management, much of your time will be in strategic planning. You would be involved in basic planning if you are a middle manager, but it would be short term based, like operational planning.
Even though, you lead your team effectively, you still need to be familiar with both strategic and operational planning. To know the difference between these two kinds of planing, think of it from a military perspective.Strategic plans are the main pillars in a battle whereas tactical and operational plans deals with engagements and skirmishes.
Not everyone realises planning is an important factor in making an organisation goal to become successful. The thumb rule for any work before being carried out is to be planned properly.Failure to plan a work might cause problems later on.Same principle can be applied for operational level of planning in order to achieve success in an organization.Admittedly, our chances of planning effectively in the business world are greatly diminished if we approach planning as we have done in the past.
In terms of the bigger picture, since a units effort should the overall corporate organization,it can make the corporate master plan work.In order to understand your role in planning, lets start from top of the organization pyramid.A corporate mission statement articulates the organizations mission. It gives direction to all members of the organization. The more succinct the statement of the mission, the clearer it may be.The great Henry Ford used only nine words to describe his companies mission back in 1903,which was "I will build a motor car for the multitude".
