SCUBA diving for dummies.

Over the past couple of years, a number of my friends and colleagues have asked me "What is it like to SCUBA dive?" and "How can I start diving?" Today, I write this to answer all your questions and hopefully help you on your way to becoming a certified SCUBA diver.

What is it like?

Think of it like being a cloud, you're never really up or down and you only move if you have to. This is what i think best describes the experience, the feeling of being weightless and having nothing to hold you down and nothing pulling you up. Some advice for the future sailors out there, most of people are scared of the ocean because they don't know what lies beneath it. Give it a try and clear your doubts.

Getting started....

Honestly the hardest part of SCUBA diving is getting started in the first place. Most people have no idea where to start or how to get information. Follow this simple guide to ensure smooth start to your journey.

1)Do your research

Make an effort to find out more about how you wanna start your journey. One way of doing this is by visiting your local dive shop or sporting houses and asking about dive classes and locations. If not, the internet is a thing now, right?

2) SAVE YO MUNNEH

It is a well known fact that scuba diving can be somewhat expensive especially in the long run. However, if you manage your time, money and number of dives accordingly, it can and will work out in your favour.

3) Choose a SCUBA diving course

While diving has some inherent risks, these risks can be effectively managed when divers learn to check and use their gear properly and to follow safe diving practices. A wide variety of scuba diving courses is available to allow divers to start enjoying the underwater world safely.

Most scuba diving centres offer everything from "try dives" (where curious people can show up and try scuba diving in a pool with no commitment) to open water courses which certify a diver for life.

4) Buy/ Rent Gear

Scuba diving is an equipment-dependent sport. A diver needs a full set of well-maintained, properly fitting scuba gear before he can start diving. Most scuba diving courses include rental gear in the price of the course, so it is not essential that a diver own a complete set of gear. In fact, many divers never purchase a full set of gear but prefer to rent gear or purchase only personal items such as wetsuits, fins, and masks.
Of course, owning your dive gear has many advantages. Divers who own dive gear can be certain of its fit, function, and maintenance, and they are usually more comfortable and confident underwater than those who do not.

Scuba diving is a fantastic and definitely an outstanding activity that cannot be compared to anything else. The fact that it has a world wide audience is not random at all. Through their underwater adventures divers can experience unique feelings such as weightlessness, serenity, escaping of daily routine, observation of underwater life etc. The experiences that one can obtain through Scuba Diving can classify it as an extremely addictive hobby and i hope that this posting helps you on your way to being certified.

Let me know what you think :)
