Hi everyone,
then when I have finished my high school, I have been continuing my
higher education abroad in ALAM ( Malaysian Maritime Academy).
Luckily no need
for me to cook cause ALAM provide the meals for the students so no need for us
to cook,
after that I moved to shipboard training. Again I’m lucky the food
there is served no need for me to cook.
There on board ship where the challenge
has been begun. On board that ship there is habit which is that at the weekend
the lowest ranks, Cadet & joiner officer, has to cook for all crew as entertainment.
I was totally shocked cause I can cook nothing beside boil egg and in the same
time I had culture shock because of my culture life that I had been grown with
as I mentioned above, “I’m man, it’s shameful to cook, this is for girl”
speaking to myself. So I refuse to cook
and I always spend my weekend at my cabin and I avoid spending the weekend with
them to escape from cooking. After 10 month doing same thing ,new seniors join
the ship one of them was the captain, This captain has experience with some of
my countrymen officers so he is aware of my culture so he met me and “Ebrahim
you are not in Yemen you are away from your traditional life you have to make
with other crew culture exchange Arabian food is one of the best food, you have
to start learn how to cook how to depend on yourself how to cook you have to
break your ego, your friends had broken
their culture shock so you should to and next weekend you have to cook KABSA (Arabian rice with meat) for everybody you have five days to prepare yourself” Captain said.
Did I continue my refuse? How did I spend this 5 days? And
what happened in that weekend?
