As a cadet, there were plenty experiences i came across the time i was on board vessel. Some of the experiences were a good memory and some were bad.But good or bad, there was a lot of things i learned from it and some the things were some leadership skills. My first ship was a container ship & and it was one of the last fleets of container vessel in my company. The name was PAC Aquila.I spent around 8 months and 23 days onboard this vessel and I had two masters at that time. One was the ex-master & one was the newly joined one,in command.
To cut the story short,my first captain was an african guy,and he was strict from top to toes.Usually he is very particular about safety and rules are strictly to be followed. He was 35 and was a newly promoted master at that time. The leadership skilled i learned from him is proper planning. He was an exceptional planner and usually he was very reluctant on shore leaves. The crew eventhough were not happy with him,for his strict behaviour,he put safety of crew as his top priority. There were times when i got a good scolding and there were times i had good party time with him.He taught me how to mix around with the crew but also maintaining the captain-crew relationship.
My second captain was a Myanmar guy named Maung Maung Mya.He was a senior captain and have been sailing for the past 20 years as a captain. He was 57 at the time when i was onboard. This caaptain is my particular favourite captain because he was always teaching me and never had once he got angry whenever i repeatedly asked him some question. He always used to say to me,be nice to a person, tht person will be nice to another person. The leadership skill i earned from him is hardworking and ready to take charge.Despite his age,he still wakes up at five am and exercises everyday,in the steering gear room.He also is a very proactive guy.
When there is a surveyor onboard,he will usually go and meet him, handshake and explain and provides whatever the surveyor requests and this is a skill i admire from him.The next skill i learned is management skills. This skill i saw very clearly in my chiefmate,an indonesian guy named Dian Sigran. There were times he was a bit temperamental but most of the times,he would do an excellent job in managing the work and crew. There were times when we were shortage of crew and had to do multiple shifts, and he was there helping us out even during his resthours and giving out free soft drinks and cigarettes for the crew. When i asked him why,he told me when we want people to work hard and give all they got in,we should do the same for them.Soo far these are leadership skills i had acquird from my onboard experience.
