Good day everyone,
This will be my final blog entry.For this entry, i would like to choose about Leadership power related to my on board ship training for 365 days.I believe this period of time will not be forget by all the officer,engineer and rating that work at sea.In this period of time, you are learning about shipping work environment, management, work field in certain position,human element and much more.
I believe that everyone has their own leadership power.This leadership power effected by many factors such as life background,life experience,work position,personality,nationality and many more.
In my opinion ,these power are owned by seafarer by their nature of rank on board.
Before that let me state 7 leadership power:
*Status power
*Information power
*Connection power
*Expert power
*Reward power
*Sanction power
*Personnel power
From my experience, the status power is normally by the ship captain. Captain is the main man on the ship. He is overall in charge in everything.He need the senior officer advice and information to help making good and better decision for ship regarding to any situation. The responsibility that carried just enough to make him or her have this status power. Last time, my captain use his status to send me home for reporting back to academy for final year studies.
Information power is normally by someone who lead their department. For deck department will be Chief officer,Engine department by 2nd engineer and Galley Department by Chief Cook. These men are those who knew well regarding their expertise field. Chief officer knew well about ship maintenance, cargo handling and crew management. All this information will be share to Captain, so the captain can make good decision for the good of the ship.
Connection power. This power is owned by Ship Administration Assistant.Shared the same work station with Master from 8 to 5 just make him enough to have this power.Sometime the captain share many things with SAA, the bond between them sometime make the ship personnel use SAA, as the man to tell or gain information to master.Last time i used my SAA to ask master for my immediate sign off after completion of sea service period. Captain knew about this thing and act accordingly.Thanks again to my SAA if not i will be late reporting to my academy.
Expert power is dedicated to ship crews. These men are those who walk the talk. They do the job delegated to them everyday.The experience gain by them when doing the work make them expert in their field. Example, Pump man is the man who know very well about hand on maintenance on deck such as overhaul pump.Most of the time,i will help my pump man to do the job so i can be expert as him too!
Reward power normally owned by the high authority person on board such as Chief officer and 2nd Engineer.As seafarer, we are not pleased by the gift given by someone as it is not the rewarding culture. Rewarding culture on board is like early knock off from work or day off on Sunday or public holiday.Normally C/O will reward day off after the ship sailed out from the port as all the deck crew were tired including THE CADET!
Sanction power is defined as the power owned to punish people.Captain and chief engineer have these power. From my experience, my Captain sent off one engine crew because of sex harassment he did to one Lady engineer. He get immediate sign off and get replace by other person on next day without any delay.
Personal power is subjective to any rank. Mostly this personal power is owned by someone on board that u inspired. For me this personal power i dedicated to my 2nd officer during on board Bunga Kasturi Enam. I did watch with him and every Sunday (holiday) i will be on bridge during noon watch just to learn with him. He have strong personality. He shared many thing with me related to job field, life experience and listen to my story too.
In conclusion, the above story is just my opinion based on my on board training time.It may be different from other peoples opinion.
